Instructor Qualifications

Michael has been a driving instructor since 2000, and is a certified member of the Road Safety Authority's register of Approved Driving Instructors (ADI). Prior to the establishment of the ADI register, he was a certified member of the Driving Instructor Register of Ireland (DIR) for eight years.

ADI

Following the introduction of new laws to regulate driving instructors in Ireland, the Road Safety Authority launched the register of Approved Driving Instructors (ADI). Since May 1, 2009, anyone charging for driving lessons must be listed on this register. The comprehensive ADI examination is comprised of three stages: an extended theory test, an extended practical driving test, and an 'Ability to Instruct' test.

Only instructors who have passed all three stages are entered on the ADI register, guaranteeing that they meet the required standard not only in their own driving skills, but also in their ability to teach others.

DIR

Prior to the introduction of the ADI scheme, the Driving Instructor Register of Ireland (DIR) operated a similar three stage registration system, involving a written test, a practical test of driving ability, and a practical test of tuition ability.
